The Terry volleyball team has looked crisper and more determined in the early part of the 2019 season. That has given head coach Ali Gonzalez a lot of confidence in her team.
Terry took care of business in a Wednesday afternoon match at Ranger Gym, sweeping past Spring Woods 25-15, 25-12, 25-21.
“I think the Lady Rangers are in a better position than they have been in the last few years,” Gonzalez said. “We’re stronger and in a building process.”
Terry pulled away from the Lady Tigers in the first set, jumping out to an 18-7 lead before pulling away for the 10-point win.
The Lady Rangers then went on an 11-0 run to take a 14-3 lead in the second set en route to a big win.
The third set was a lot closer, as Spring Woods took advantage of some hitting errors by Terry to keep the set close.
Tied at 18, Terry took the lead for good on a kill by sophomore Raven Jordan and junior middle blocker Logan Jordan, along with an ace by Logan to take a 21-18 lead.
The Lady Rangers kept building on their lead on hitting errors by the Lady Tigers, and junior libero Ckyra Anthony ended the match with an ace.
“Ckyra is stepping up big-time for us right now,” Gonzales said.
“I can use her in the front row as an outside hitter, or I can use her in the back row as a libero.”
The win puts Terry at 3-1 on the season, with a trip to Alief Taylor coming up next on Friday.
Gonzalez said that she feels her team will be ready to make a push towards the postseason.
“We’ll be in the top four (in District 24-5A) this year,” she said.
