PORT LAVACA — Defense was in action between the Stafford Spartans and the Calhoun Sandcrabs in the 4A UIL Basketball Bi-District Playoffs Friday afternoon.
The Spartans and the Sandcrabs combined for 19 first half turnovers and keep the game close 19-17 Stafford leading.
After missing some practice time due to Winter Storm Uri, Stafford head Basketball Coach David Montano needed an opponent like Calhoun.
“it was good for us to see a team like that in the first round and just kind of get back on the court really with all this going on with the freeze and all that.” Montano Said. “We’ve been off the gym I want to say four days so yesterday was our first practice, today was our game.”
The Spartans retooled in the second half and went to the free throw line seven times and completed 9/12 free throws.
Stafford used its size a advantage inside the paint in the second half, Montano said, and taking advantage of the post play and “kicking out to open shots.”
The Spartans beat Calhoun, 56-39, and cinched a Bi-District title.
Stafford will face the winner of tomorrows match between the Cuero Gobblers and the Wimberley Texans.
Date and time of the area playoffs are to be announced.
