Swing away

Needville junior Sarah Doggett spikes the ball over the net.

The Needville High School volleyball team took a rare night off this past Friday after opening District 25-4A play with a win on Tuesday over Bay City.

The Texas Girls Coaches Association ranked-No. 1 Lady Jays are perfect through 15 games, and they will host Columbia on Tuesday at Blue Jay Gym.

Needville faces the Lady ’Necks in a district contest for the first time since 2017. Over the past two seasons, Columbia hasn’t been on the Lady Jay’s schedule.

Tuesday’s match will be a warm-up for Friday’s game at Sweeny.

The Lady Bulldogs move over from District 24-4A, where for the past two seasons, Sweeny has been the district champion.

East Bernard 3, Van Vleck 0

The Brahmarettes made short work of Van Vleck on Friday with a 3-0 victory, 25-5, 25-15, 25-7.

East Bernard will travel to Danbury on Tuesday. The match was initially scheduled to take place at East Bernard. The varsity and junior varsity teams will be the only teams traveling on Tuesday.

Brazos 3, Hempstead 0

The Cougarettes bounced back from a District 24-3A opening loss to East Bernard on Friday.

Brazos swept a home match against Hempstead, 25-9, 25-10, 25-11.

The Cougarettes will host a key match against Boling on Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs have finished second the past two seasons in 24-3A, and they will likely again be a team battling for one of the top four playoff spots.
