TYLER — Even at the Texas East State tournament, the Lamar American 10-year-old All-stars have shown to have a flair for the dramatic.
After jumping out to a 6-0 lead, American saw the Post Oak All-stars rally to take a one-run lead before putting on another patented rally.
A three-run fifth inning propelled the American All-stars to a 9-8 victory over Post Oak in Saturday night’s first round at Faulkner Park.
The win sends American to the winner’s bracket finals, where it will take on the Washington County-Port Neches winner Sunday night at 8.
Down by a run in the bottom of the fifth, American scored three runs without recording an out to take the lead for good.
Clay Godby and Brandon Mays hit consecutive singles to left and Bradley Hermes (2 RBIs) hit a two-run double to center to put American on top to stay.
Trenton Turner (2 RBIs) then singled in Hermes with what proved to be the game-winning run.
In the top of the sixth, Anthony Barzilla (3-for-4, 3 RBIs) hit a home run for Post Oak to trim the deficit to a run. But American pitcher Chase Batten retired the last two batters to end the game.
American scored six runs in the bottom of the first to take what seemed to be a commanding lead.
Connor Tallas put American up 3-0 with a line drive homer to center after Batten and Brady Duque reached on singles.
Consecutive walks drawn by Godby, Dane Kirchheiner and Hermes loaded the bases, and Turner also walked to force in Godby. Jaxson Urbanek (2-for-2) singled in Kirchheiner and Duque walked to force in Hermes.
Post Oak scored solo runs in the second and third before scoring five runs in the fourth to take its only lead, 7-6.
