Rare is it that a district contest takes care of two birds with one stone, but that was the case Tuesday night in Mustang Gym.
The Lamar Consolidated High School girls basketball team was able to pick up a victory in its District 24-5A opener and secure a 65-41 win against rival Terry in the Battle of the ’Berg.
“We want to continue to grow from this game,” Lamar Consolidated head coach Katherine Scott said. “We have to have the mindset that we’re going to focus on the little things each game.
“We can’t focus on the win and focus on getting better.”
The game plan for coach Scott was attacking the paint early and often in transition.
Junior Taylor Jarrels, sophomore Aliyah Solis and junior Hannah Humphrey executed that plan to build an early lead against the Lady Rangers and not look back.
The Lady Mustangs jumped out to an early 21-12 lead in the first quarter behind eight points from Solis including 2-of-3 from the free-throw line.
Humphrey added six points on three baskets from the field and senior Faith Ojuolape flexed her muscles early in the paint with multiple rebounds and five points in the opening frame.
Senior Erineisha Grant was the force behind the Lady Rangers on Tuesday night.
Grant’s effort level kept Terry in the game. She added four points in the opening frame.
Grant scored four more in the third and three in the fourth. But she was shut out in the second while the Lady Mustangs extended their lead entering halftime, outscoring Terry 15-6.
Jarrels and Solis each knocked down a three-pointer while junior Ryana Mcclean added five points.
Coming out of the break, Lamar Consolidated’s offense came from the charity stripe.
The Lady Mustangs were 4-for-9 from the free-throw line while senior Ashley Igwe and Ojuolape each added a basket along with Humphrey’s first trey.
Terry seniors Esther Oderinde and Grant helped to keep the Lady Rangers in the game with four points each in the third quarter.
Lamar Consolidated was able to hold its gap with four points from Jarrels and 10 points from Humphrey on five baskets from the field.
Humphrey finished with a game-high 20 points and Jarrels added 14 and Solis had 13 points.
Grant had 13 points for Terry and Oderinde added 10 points.
Lamar Consolidated (5-5, 1-0) and Terry (3-2, 0-1) will both play the LCISD Invitational at George Ranch over the weekend.
