STAFFORD – The Needville softball team improved to 10-1 in District 25-4A as the Lady Jays beat Stafford 11-1 in five innings on Friday.
Needville scored five runs in the first inning, starting with a bases-loaded walk and error that scored two runs. Then second baseman Karolyn Carter doubled home a pair and Bailie Pittman had a bunt single that scored Carter.
Carter got another RBI on a sacrifice fly to left that scored Abby Cousins in the second inning.
Yasmyn Ochoa hit a three-run home run in the third inning that scored Pittman and Bradie Bruce to put Needville up 9-0.
Carter had another sac fly to score Celeste Aguliar in the fourth inning, and Madison Kovar singled home Haileigh Jack in the fifth to round out the scoring for the Lady Jays.
Pittman led the team with two hits, while Cousins and Aguliar scored two runs in the game. Carter also had for RBIs.
Cousins pitched four innings and had nine strikeouts while giving up only one hit. Kovar pitched the fifth inning and gave up an unearned run.
The win puts Needville at 16-8-1 on the season and 10-1 in district play. The Lady Jays will be off until Thursday, when they host Brookshire Royal at 6:30 p.m.
