Fulshear, George Ranch reach finals of the Battle of the Brazos tournament; East Bernard win the silver trophy

The annual Lamar Consolidated ISD Battle of the Brazos Volleyball Invitational returned after a hiatus in 2020, and no surprise a pair of LCISD teams were in the running for the top prize.

George Ranch, Fulshear and Katy Jordan were the three teams from Fort Bend that reached the gold bracket on Saturday, hosted by George Ranch.

The Chargers finished third overall after beating fellow 5A powerhouse Friendswood, before losing to eventual champion Cypress Woods. Fulshear also collected a win against top 4A team Bellville on Saturday.

George Ranch lost its opening match against Brenham on Saturday before a win against Jordan and loss to Friendswood to finish sixth overall in the gold standings.

Fort Bend also had a strong showing in the other final brackets. East Bernard won the silver trophy, while Needville and Foster finished third and fourth respectively.

Travis and Lamar Consolidated were fourth and sixth respectively in the bronze bracket. Dulles ranked second in the copper finals, in the same field Terry and Randle were sixth and seventh.

Fulshear senior Ava Underwood was named the tournament’s most valuable setter, her teammate senior outside hitter Brielle Warren was named to the all-tournament team. Seniors Dylan Hoskins and Avery Shimaitis represented George Ranch on the all-tournament team.

The top awards went Cy-Woods senior D’nari Mills (MVP), Brenham junior Brooke Bentke (most valuable attacker) and Cy-Woods senior Eliane Gregersen (most valuable libero).

Brenham sophomore Charli Crowson, Bellville’s Carly Lange and Madison Morgan, and Friendswood’s Sarah Sitton and Megan Hubbard rounded out the all-tournament team.

In pool play, George Ranch was undefeated in sets against Randle, Dobie and Columbia, setting a mark of 8-0. The Longhorns beat Dobie 25-19, 25-17, Columbia 25-21, 25-18, Randle 25-8 and 25-17.

Randle was 2-6, losing to Columbia 25-17, 25-0, Dobie 25-7, 25-16 and George Ranch.

Kempner was a part of Pool A, but the Lady Cougars exited the tournament with

In Pool B, Needville was 7-2 overall. The Lady Jays beat Cy-Lakes 25-7, 25-8, Houston Heights 25-13, 25-16 and Huntsville 25-11, 25-16 before losing to Brenham in three sets 21-25, 25-23, 15-10.

In Pool C, Terry was 3-6 for fourth place. The Lady Rangers lost to Brazoswood 25-14, 25-19, Jordan 22-25, 25-19, 15-3 and Cy-Springs 25-8, 25-14 before beating Northbrook 25-13, 25-10.

In Pool D, Lamar Consolidated was the third-place finisher. The Lady Mustangs beat Sweeny 25-9, 25-11 and Dulles 26-24, 25-21 while losing to Bellville 25-16, 25-22 and Eastwood 25-19, 19-25, 15-10.

Dulles finished in fourth place. The Lady Vikings won their opening match against Sweeny 25-16, 25-6 before losing to Eastwood 25-15, 14-25, 15-13, Lamar Consolidated and Bellville 25-16, 25-15.

In Pool E, Foster lost to Cy-Ridge 25-17, 21-25, 17-15 to open their tournament run before beating Royal 25-6, 25-6 and Langham Creek 18-25, 25-17, 15-10.

In Pool G, Fulshear and Travis were the first and third-place finishers. Fulshear beat Shadow Creek 25-20, 25-0, St. John’s 25-22, 20-25, 15-13, Davis 25-9, 25-6 and Travis 25-20, 25-18.

Travis beat Davis 25-8, 25-9 and Shadow Creek 23-25, 25-17, 15-9 before losing to St. John’s 25-18, 25-9 and Fulshear.

In Pool H, East Bernard was second with wins over Cy-Park 25-21, 25-17, Waller 25-12, 29-30, 15-6 and Alief Taylor 25-16, 25-16. The Brahmarettes lost a tight match to Friendswood 25-23, 25-21.
