WALLIS — Brazos returned to 3A this year and hosted the District 24-3A cross country championship. The Cougars and rival East Bernard were able to earn their ticket to regionals.
East Bernard qualified both boys and girls teams. The Brahmarettes won the girls’ title with 34 points while the boys were second to Boling.
Emma Alexander won the girls’ varsity race with a time of 13 minutes and 3.6 seconds. The East Bernard girls had six runners in the top 15, with Abby Hudgins (13:20.4) in second and Samantha Rabius in sixth (13:43.0). The rest of the group was Anna Witte (11th, 13:58.1), Alejandra Avila (14th, 14:23.5) and Kylee Bates (15th, 14:23.5).
The Brazos girls had four runners in the top 20 to finish second overall. The top finisher was Maddie Kneip for fourth with a time of 13:38.9. Kneip was followed by Makinzy Kneip (7th, 13:44.5), Denise Hauer (9th, 13:54.0) and Gracie Arteaga (20th, 15:14.4).
East Bernard’s Colby Kurtz won the boys’ race with a time of 17:47.2. The Brahmas were second in the team standings with four other runs in the top 20, including Barrett Whitley (6th, 19:16.2), Cade Janecek (7th, 19:51.2), Chris Kopecky (8th, 19:57.1) and Kaleb Rivera (19th, 22:13.3).
Zachary Cortez will represent Brazos at regionals with fifth place finish at 19:10.8.
