George Ranch High School is celebrating its 10th anniversary of opening its doors to students this year. For nine of those years, there has been one constant: girls varsity cross country.

Head coach Alicia Dutch and the Longhorns secured the program’s ninth straight district title on Thursday at Seabourne Creek Nature Park in Rosenberg.

“It’s always great to win,” Dutch said. “We’re still pushing for that state qualifying time.”

The Longhorns girls edged out Brazoswood by two points with all seven runners finishing in the top 20.

George Ranch group was headlined by freshman Madison Haldiman, who finished second overall with a time of 18 minutes and 51.7 seconds.

“Madison is going to be one of our top runners in school history,” Dutch said. “She is sitting in the top 10 in the regional as a freshman. She had a high chance of getting out to state.”

Haldiman was followed by teammate senior Brooke Johnson in third place with a time of 19:52.7.

The Longhorns had two other top 10 finishes with freshman Kianna Stamps in ninth with a time of 20:27.0 and senior Alyssa Heikkila in 10th with a time of 20:31.4.

“I have to attribute this win to my three seniors that have run cross country since they were freshman: Sydney Delgado, Brooke Johnson and Alyssa Heikkila,” Dutch said. “They helped us win our first District 23-6A champion three years ago. That experience has carried us and this is their championship.”

Dutch also wanted to thank the parents along with her husband and fellow coach Todd Dutch for the overwhelming support of the program.

The boys finished in fourth place in the team standings with junior Eli Green qualifying for the regional meet in sixth place with a time of 16:06.6.

Senior Caleb Degeyter finished 18th place with a time of 17:12.8.

The Longhorns girls team now head to the Region III-6A championship on Monday, Oct. 28 at Kate Barr Ross Memorial Park in Huntsville.
