Brazos junior Jaylin Vela drives to the basket.

The Brazos High School boys basketball had a tough opening round matchup as the No. 4 seed out of District 29-2A.

The Cougars faced No. 6 state-ranked Port Aransas in the Region IV-2A bi-district playoffs Monday at Bloomington High School.

But Brazos didn’t back down from the Marlins’ challenge, even leading a large chunk of the game before falling to Port Aransas, 56-54.

The Cougars outscored the Marlins in both the second and third quarters, 27-to-18. But a late charge by Port Aransas downed Brazos.

The Marlins hit a game-winning shot with six seconds remaining to secure the win.

Brazos head coach Jon Waldrop called the loss a “heart-breaker” and expressed gratitude for the seniors’ efforts this season.

The senior class had made the playoffs three years in a row.

Port Aransas will face the winner of the Freer-Santa Maria bi-district game.

The Buckaroos and Cougars will face off Tuesday at Kingsville High School.
