Brazos girls cross country team, Esmeralda Garcia, Rubi Garcia, Makinzy Kneip, Gracie Arteaga, Allie Gonzales, Valentina Ibarra and Ashley Perez finished second at the Region IV-2A cross country championships.

The Brazos High School cross country team entered the Region IV-2A meets as the District 29-2A champions and left Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with more medals.

The Cougarettes placed second overall in the girls team standings with 81 points behind only San Saba (43) Monday at the Region III-2A championships on the Islanders’ cross country course.

Brazos was led by a pair of freshmen Esmeralda Garcia in seventh place with a time of 12 minutes and 36.94 seconds in the two-mile run and Rubi Garcia in eighth place with a time of 12:42.60.

Sophomore Makinezy Kneip finished in 14th place with a time of 13:09.36 and freshman Gracie Arteaga was 18th with a time of 13:17.40.

For the boys, junior Zachary Cortez finished in the top 10 with a time of 17:26.94 to advance to state in the 5,000-meter run.

The 2019 UIL state meet will take place on Nov. 9 at Old Settlers Park.
