Marshall sophomore Jaland Lowe draws three defenders while driving to the basket Friday against Terry.

The Marshall Buffaloes were not at full strength, but head coach Ronnie Courtney’s squad nearly knocked off the District 23-5A champion Saturday at HISD’s “The Pavillon.”

The Panthers needed overtime to overcome Marshall, 73-71.

Northside will face the winner of Goose Creek Memorial and Nederland. The Memorial-Nederland contest will take place on Monday.

The Buffalo season ended on a buzzer-beating jumper from Northside junior Johnny Salazar.

Marshall started strong leading 16-11 after the first quarter, but Northside chipped away to lead 52-50, entering the final eight minutes of regulation. The game went to overtime tied at 67. Northside’s leading scorer Ronald Holmes fouled out in the last minute of regulation.

The Buffaloes were without junior Chris Marshall on Saturday; he was not in uniform or on the Buffalo bench, per RCS Sports’ Jim Hicks.

Marshall can still hold their head high after earning a playoff spot out of the ultra-competitive District 24-5A, which the Buffalo nearly helped sweep 23-5A in bi-district play. Saturday’s game also marked the first playoff game for Marshall since the 2017 postseason.

The Buffalo finished with a 10-10 record overall and a 9-6 record in 24-5A.
