Brahmas sweep varsity awards at Brazos Invitational

Colby Kurtz took first place in the varsity boys race for East Bernard, setting the pace for the field in the 5,000-meter event with a time of 17:28.08.

WALLIS — A bright, blue sky welcomed the runners to the course wrapped around Brazos High School in Wallis for the 15th Annual Brazos High School Cross Country Invitational. The field included teams from across the coastal bend, but a team close to home finished on top in both varsity races.

The East Bernard girls won the team title in the 3,200-meter race with a total of 50 points and the boys were first in the varsity 5,00-meter run with a total of 43 points.

The Brahmrettes edged out Sealy (58), Bellville (106), Brazos (106), Columbia (143), Boling (172), Van Vleck (180), El Campo (184) and Ganado (203) in the team standings.

Samantha Rabius was the top finisher from the local team in the individual standings with a second-place finish at 13 minutes and 19 seconds.

Rabius’ teammates were close behind: Lily Alexander was ninth overall (13:50.85), Abby Hudgins was 10th (14:04.16), Ashlynn Lemos was 15th (14:29.08), Anna Witte was 16th (14:33.54), Kadence Hernandez was 23rd (14:48.66), Jasmine Munivez was 25th (14:50.58), Sydney Tijerina was 31st (15:04.52), Kyleigh was 36th (15:15.24) and Maria Avia was 40th (15:22.57).

Brazos had three runners in the top 15: Denise Hauer was sixth overall with a time of 13:45.94, while Rubi Garica was 11th (14:07.53) and Makinezy Kneip was 14th (14:28.23).

Cougarettes Lily Bertrand (30th, 15:03.13) and Gracie Arteaga (56th, 16:22.48) rounded out the Brazos times.

The Brahmas squeaked out a lead over Boling (45), Bellville (88), Caldwell (123), Angleton Christian (125), Brazos (132), Palacios (161), Van Vleck (187) and Columbia (208).

Colby Kurtz took first place in the varsity boys race for East Bernard, setting the pace for the field in the 5,000-meter event with a time of 17:28.08. Teammate Chris Kopecky was third at 18:09.42, while Ty Warncke (13th, 195:50.18) and Cade Janecek (14th, 19:52.26) both finished in the top 15t.

East Bernard’s time included Bryton Karasek (27th, 21:11.34), Kaleb Rivera (32, 21:32.79) and Corbin Hecox (57th, 23:58.01.

The Brazos boys were in a tight pack throughout the home race. The Cougars’ top finisher was Bryan Pedroza, he was 23rd with a time of 21:01.42. Brazos finishers were: Rees Snedaker (24th, 21:02.89), Wesley Holub (31st, 21:32.69), Joshua Martinez (42nd, 22:30.64), Anthony Gonzales (50th, 23:12.55), Gauge McCain (54th, 23:34.66) and Payton Nanez (55th, 23:42.81).
