The Needville football team received a couple of big honors after the Blue Jays got a big win on Friday.
The team was named the 4A Team of the Week by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football after its 34-17 win over No. 5 Columbia at home. The win puts the Blue Jays at 6-1 overall and 3-0 in District 13-4A DI play, all alone in first place.
The win pulls Needville closer to winning its first district championship since 1987. It also moved Needville from No. 10 to No. 8 in the 4A Division I state rankings for this week.
Senior running back Aston Stredick was also named one of 10 contestants for the Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week for Week 7. Stredick ran for 307 yards on 24 carries and four touchdowns for the Blue Jays, including a 99-yard touchdown run.
Fans can vote for Stredick to win the Player of the Week honor by going to www.texasfootball.com.
Stredick was a Player of the Week selection last season and was a nominee for the Mr. Texas Football award.
At the end of the season, 10 finalists are named for the Mr. Texas Football award for player of the year. After a fan vote at the end of the high school football season, the winner will be announced at the 2019 Texas Bowl.
Needville is on a bye this week and will resume play next Saturday against Fulshear at Traylor Stadium.
