Needville senior quarterback Trevor Baker threw for three touchdowns in the Blue Jays’ win at Stafford.

Needville kept its place atop the District 12-4A DI standings Friday night with a 28-14 win over Stafford.

Senior Trevor Baker threw for three touchdowns while the Needville defense held the Spartans under 300 yards of offense.

Baker hits senior wide receiver Dax Bridges for a 71-yard touchdown pass on the Blue Jays’ second drive of the game.

Needville led 7-0 with a little over five minutes left in the first quarter.

Stafford answered with a broken play that turned into a 74-yard passing touchdown in the final seconds of the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7. After a quick three-and-out by Needville, Stafford took advantage of a short field to take a 14-7 lead in the first few minutes of the second quarter.

Needville answered with a nine-play, 56-yard drive to tie the game.

Baker connected with freshman Diego Ochoa for a 13-yard touchdown pass. Ochoa was called up for his first varsity football game Friday night.

The game was again tied with 7:10 remaining in the first half.

After an extended punt return from senior Walker Warncke and personal foul set the Blue Jays up just out the red zone.

On the first play from scrimmage, Baker recorded his third passing touchdown of the night.

The pass found junior Cole Todd for a 27-yard touchdown pass.

Needville led 21-14 with five minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Senior Brandon Glover Jr. intercepted a pass in the end zone to keep Stafford off the board late in the second quarter.

A nine-play drive, including eight runs by Warncke, helped Needville go up 28-14. Walker scored on a 32-yard touchdown run with a little under eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Warncke had 35 carries for 151 yards and one touchdown. Baker was 6-of-18 for 148 yards and three touchdowns.

Sophomore Pedro Cavazos converted all four extra points. 

Needville (4-3) improved to 2-0 in District 12-4A DI. The Blue Jays will host Brazosport next Friday. The Exporters lost to El Campo on Friday, 35-14.
