What the heck does party politics have in the business of the Fort Bend County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office?

Quoting from the front-page article in Monday’s Herald: “…a long-time active true Democrat…with a proven Democratic Voting record” and apparently some have a problem with another due to; “…not a true Democrat because of her conservative voting record.”

Do I have it wrong?

Is not this office primarily a business office in the business of assessing of taxes as mandated by the entities it serves and collecting those taxes and disbursing those as required?

To the penny?

It does not establish exceptions, valuations, or set tax rates does it?

Don’t the elected officials of the various entities do that?

So, what the heck do I care what the politics of this particular office holder is except to be qualified to do the work, keep the office running efficiently, and make sure all the laws and rules are strictly followed?

This office serves the cities, schools, and other taxing entities in this county and is the state agent for vehicle taxes.

Whoever runs it better be well acquainted with the rules and laws to keep us out of legal trouble.

So, for my money — and yours — I think I’ll vote for the best qualified and it remains to be determined who that may be.

Lord help me if I vote out of party lines!
