Virginia Alice Draper Auten

Our beloved mother, Virginia Alice Draper Auten, 90, passed into the arms of Jesus on August 17, 2019 in Houston, Texas. She was a wonderful and devoted Catholic wife, mother, and daughter.

She was born on November 18, 1928 in Los Angeles, California, the only child of William and Laura Swaby Draper. Virginia grew up in Los Angeles where she met her future husband, Dean Auten, while in high school. Dean joined the U.S. Air Force and upon graduating from aviation cadets, they were married on October 8, 1948, the same day that Dean received his pilot wings and commission as a Second Lieutenant. During their married life, Dean’s Air Force career took them and their 6 children all over the world, living in Japan, South Carolina, Newfoundland, Colorado Springs, Virginia, Portugal and Montana before retiring from the Air Force and moving to Florida. Eventually, Dean and Virginia moved to Houston, Texas in 1979 to be near some of their children and their families. They moved to Richmond, Texas in 1989.

Once her children were grown, Virginia sought employment and worked as an optician in Tallahassee, Florida and in Houston. She was an avid reader as evidenced by her extensive library. She grew up with music, playing the violin from age 4 and imparted the gift of singing to her children, especially Christian songs and hymns. She loved gardening and dogs. There was always a pet dog at her home from the time she was a little girl.

Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, William and Laura Draper and numerous aunts and uncles. She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Dean Auten, her six children, Lark Maresh and husband Julius, Wendy Emmons and husband Jim, Beth Kugler and husband Mike, Nick Auten, Cecilia Perez and husband Xavier, and Joe Auten and wife Melinda. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, Jason Maresh and wife Jodie, Derek Maresh and wife Dana, Joe Maresh and wife Amanda, Luke Maresh, Erica Finnegan and husband Broc, Drew Maresh and wife Chelsea, Steve Lewis and wife Karyn, Alesha Canamar and husband Abel, Mike Kugler Jr. and wife Erin, Chris Kugler, Mackinzie Auten, Paul Perez, Ayla Perez, William Perez, Bailey Wilson, Mack Auten, and Sadie Auten.
