AUSTIN — Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick has appointed five Senators to serve on the powerful budget conference committee which is tasked with producing the final version of the state budget; the only piece of legislation lawmakers must constitutionally pass during a legislative session.
Five State Representatives from the House were previously appointed by the Speaker. The House budget appropriates $251 billion and the Senate budget appropriates $247 billion.
Along with Kolkhorst, the Senate conference committee members include Senators Jane Nelson, Joan Huffman, Larry Taylor and Robert Nichols.
“I am honored to have been selected for the third consecutive session by Lt. Gov. Patrick for such an important responsibility,” said Sen. Kolkhorst.
“My fundamental goal is to help craft a fiscally responsible budget that delivers tax relief, school finance reform and a meaningful teacher pay raise.”
In addition to being named a conferee on House Bill 1, Senator Kolkhorst was named as a conferee on Senate Bill 500, the supplemental budget that includes billions in emergency funding for Hurricane in Harvey expenses. Kolkhorst has previously served four times on the state’s influential budget conference committee.
“I have every confidence that Senator Kolkhorst and the other Senate conferees will make sure that the Texas budget reflects our strong conservative principles, our commitment to property tax reform, law enforcement and border security, rebuilding in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, school finance reform and making sure our state continues to move forward and our economy continues to lead the nation and the world,” Patrick said.
