Rosenberg Mayor Bill Benton is hopeful that council meetings will soon be held at City Hall.
Before Tuesday’s regular Rosenberg City Council meeting began, Benton shared some news with the council.
“They have found a vaccine (for COVID-19) in England and another one in China and lets hope those work out,” Benton said.
“Somebody said they might have one as soon as September or maybe October. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. It seems a little ambitious.”
A total of 6,130 residents have tested positive for the virus, according to the Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Department, which is tracking the impact of the virus county-wide.
In the 77471 zip code of Rosenberg, there are 557 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
City council has been holding council meetings via Zoom teleconference on and off since April.
In June, Communications Director Tanya Kveton said with the rising COVID-19 count in the community, the city felt it was in the best interest of everyone involved to hold the meeting via video conference until further notice.
“Another thing I want to mention is I had somebody asked us about the way were doing these meetings,” Benton continued. “(Citizens) wanted to see bigger pictures of us. I’m not in control of the IT aspect. I asked (City Manager) John (Maresh) if it’s possible.
“Could you explain what we see and why were seeing it and why it’s the size that it is?”
Maresh explained that the Zoom meeting’s focal point is the PowerPoint presentation of the agenda item up for discussion.
“I think it’s more important that the public sees the PowerPoints than they see our ugly mugs,” Benton responded. “Speaking strictly for myself. Anyway that’s why we have the size of the screen that we have it.”
The next regular Rosenberg City Council meeting will be held via Zoom teleconference on Aug.4.
Citizens will not be allowed to attend council meetings, but can still ask questions via letters, telephone or email.
