Parents at Travis High School, Bowie Middle School, Neill Elementary School and Pecan Grove Elementary School have until Thursday morning to decide whether to return to school or stay with virtual learning.

Fort Bend ISD has extended its deadline to Thursday at 8 a.m. to allow more parents to fill out their learning model selection form online.

Those forms will help the district

Dupre said that as of Tuesday afternoon, only 28% of the district’s population has filled out the form.

The FBISD board of trustees is scheduled to meet on Monday to approve the district’s reopening plans during their regular workshop and agenda review meeting for September.

Last week, the FBISD board approved a Texas Education Agency waiver that will allow for up to four more weeks of online instruction, as the first four weeks of online learning will end on Sept. 11.

The plan would have both students and teachers returning to schools in a 13-day transition period, which will allow time for the teacher to prepare and plan for students to return, with elementary students returning first before secondary school students.

Staff would be allowed to return to work as early as Sept. 23, with students returning to school as early as Sept. 28.

“We know there continues to be uncertainty about the pandemic, and I want to assure you that we have strong systems in place to ensure a safe and effective transition to face to face learning,” Dupre said.

The process, which depends on how many students elect to return to schools, could lead to some students to being moved to a different school to help all schools to maintain COVID-19 guidelines.

“We shared this possibility to be fully transparent because social distancing could, in some rare cases, cause us to move some classes to a nearby building,” Dupre said.

“We do not expect to enact this solution unless it is absolutely necessary and, even then, only after we have exhausted other solutions. If this is the case, we will communicate with these families in advance, as we know this could impact their decision on whether to proceed with face to face instruction.”
