Imam Mohamed Omar Ali
A Fort Bend County religious leader has been arrested and charged with three counts of indecency with a child and sexual assault of a child, authorities reported Monday.
The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office served four warrants to Mohamed Omar Ali, 59, a Somalian native who resides in the Houston area of Fort Bend County, the sheriff announced.
“There are four victims who were minors at the time of the assaults, which started in 2013,” Sheriff Troy Nehls reported.
Ali is a well-known Imam in the Islamic community and teaches throughout Texas and the country. Nehls told reporters.
“We believe there are other victims locally and possibly nationally,” Nehls added.
The sheriff’s office asks that if anyone is a victim or has information regarding possible victims to contact Sgt. Jonathan Howell at 281-341-4797.
Ali is currently in the Fort Bend County jail with $125,000 in bonds. U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement has also placed a hold on Ali.
“This is sickening and an abuse of power,” Nehls said. “If your children have had contact with this man, please talk to them. Victims’ identities will be protected.”
