A man was struck by an 18-wheeler and killed Wednesday while attempting to rescue a dog he had hit on U.S. 59 in Rosenberg, police reported.

The accident shut down northbound traffic for several hours at Reading Road and U.S. 59.

Vehicles were detoured around the accident site until the freeway was reopened around 12:30 p.m. Witnesses said the man stopped his small sedan on the highway and attempted to check on the dog when the big rig hit his car and killed him.
