Needville ISD was closed Friday due to last week’s heavy rains, but students will not have to make up the missed day.

Superintendent Curtis Rhodes said the decision to close the schools was made for safety reasons.

Many areas in the community experienced high water earlier in the week, and the forecasted rains for Friday meant the possibility of additional flooding.

“We just felt it was better to err on the side of caution and not chance putting people in harm’s way,” said Rhodes.

He said state requirements for annual school attendance changed several years ago from 180 days to 75,600 minutes, and Needville ISD adds enough extra minutes on its calendar each year to make up for a missed day or two.
