Michelle Florence’s photo of her grandmother earned her top honors in the photography division of the creative adults competition this year. She earned the Best of Show rosette for the portrait she took with a cell phone of her grandmother, an artist, just weeks before she died. Michelle, 56, said she was visiting her grandmother, Lorene Clute, 102, at her home in Missouri City. Michelle said Lorene spent hours coloring each day. They were sitting at Lorene’s coloring table when Lorene looked out the window at the thunderstorm outside. Michelle said she noticed how the glare of light from outside lighted Lorene’s face, and how picturesque the image appeared with the pail of colored pencils in front of Lorene. “She had a distant look on her face that I thought captured her depth,” Michelle recalled. The granddaughter grabbed her cell phone and took the photo. Lorene and the rest of the family loved the image and Michelle decided to enter it in competition at the county fair this year. Lorene died before the show.
