The Bamore Road construction project is one step closer to completion. And some city council members want to make sure that once it’s finished, the area surrounding it looks good too.

At the Rosenberg City Council meeting this week, council members approved the planned extension of Bamore Road from U.S. 59 to Stella Road.

A capital improvement project to extend Bamore Road was included in the 2017 Fort Bend County Mobility Bond issue. This project will construct a two-lane concrete, curb and gutter roadway with sidewalk from the realigned intersection of Bamore Road near the U.S. 59 frontage road, through Cottonwood subdivision to Stella Road.

According to city staff, this will complete the four-lane boulevard section for this major thoroughfare.

“So when they get the freeway done, people will be able to come under the freeway on Bamore and go to Cottonwood, which has been expanded in the last three or four years,” Mayor Bill Benton explained. “This would be a high-quality boulevard, not just thrown down asphalt. This would be concrete, curb and gutter with drainage and sidewalks. The full nine yards.”

Fort Bend County has provided mobility bond funding of up to 50% of the eligible construction costs or $900,000, whichever is less. The total project cost for engineering design and construction is estimated to be $2,486,550, and the city’s portion is estimated to be $1,586,550.

Funding has been included in the fiscal year 2020 budget.

“The front part of that subdivision has trees lining it — is there any funds we could add to make it consistent all the way through (the boulevard)?” council member Kevin Raines asked. “It’s just, we build a road and we need to beautify the road a little bit.”

Benton said he had the same thought, but reminded council that beautification comes with an ongoing maintenance cost.

“I do like the idea of trees,” council member Jacob Balderas concurred. “I think that would really make it look good instead of it just being an empty road down there.

“If we could look at some beautification funds, that would be great.” City Manager John Maresh said the city will look into it.

“I am certainly open to looking into the possibility of planting some trees,” Benton said. Council member Lisa Wallingford made a motion to extend Bamore Road from U.S. 59 to Stella Road.

The motion was seconded by Balderas and passed unanimously.
