Boy, 6, donates birthday money to help strays

Simonton Christian Academy first-grader Ricky Dodge is about to turn 7.

But unlike most kids his age, Ricky won’t have a lavish birthday party complete with gifts, money and bouncy houses, clowns and magicians.

Instead, Ricky asked his parents to donate money they would have spent on a party and gifts to help stray pets.

He also gladly turned over any cash he got from relatives and grandparents to help dogs and cats who are lost or abandoned.

Parents Brian and Courtney agreed, and purchased pet food and supplies.

Ricky donated what birthday cash he received and the pet supplies to SOCA, Save Our Companion Animals, on Friday.

“I love animals,” said Ricky, who is the loving owner of a dog his family rescued from a shelter.

SOCA volunteer Brianne Jentzen thanked Ricky for his contribution.

“You have made lots of dogs and cats very happy,” she told him. “Because of your donation, they will have food to eat and warm blankets to sleep on.”
