Making sure children have a safe path to and from school is important to Rosenberg City Council members.

Which is why the council voted to construct a sidewalk extension along the west side of Greenwood Drive from Redbud Drive to Avenue N.

This item was placed on the agenda by Mayor Bill Benton.

“Sidewalks near schools are some of the best places to start putting sidewalks,” Benton told the council.

“This would just be a continuation of a blank spot in between two sidewalks.”

Council member Isaac Davila, who lives at Greenwood and Redbud, said he’s familiar with the area and agreed the sidewalk extension would be much needed.

Navarro Middle School, George Junior High School and Terry High School stand along the area in question.

“I’ve had conversations with the residents in Greenwood and it seems that... the sidewalk extension is dearly needed,” council member Marc Morales said.

“It’s a school crossing there and children have to walk on the street with traffic coming in and out. I do believe that extension should be a no-brainer for the safety of the children.”

The rest of council concurred.

Morales then made a motion to approve a concrete sidewalk extension in the amount of $27,000. The motion was seconded by council member Tim Anders and passed unanimously.

Council member Jacob Balderas was not present for the vote.

“I know $27,000 was not budgeted for, and I get that, but this is really money well spent,” Benton finished.

The next regular Rosenberg City Council meeting will be held via Zoom teleconference Feb. 16.

Citizens will not be allowed to attend council meetings, but can still ask questions via letters, telephone or email.
